What is Psychological First Aid?

Psychological first aid is a self-help approach to identify mental health problems / mental health crisis and take necessary precautions of healing.

Why is it important?

  • Our children and youth are living in a world that’s more vulnerable than ever before.
  • With the growing technology and various other reasons, stress factors have increased exponentially which in turn increase the associated mental health problems.
  • 1 in 10 young people experience emotional and mental health problems.
  • By the time young people become adults, the incidence of mental health problems rises to somewhere between 1 in 4 and 1 in 6 people.
  • For those aged between 15 and 24 years of age, suicide is the second most common cause of death.
  • There is sufficient evidence to suggest that early intervention is largely beneficial.

What is taught?

The workshop teaches children and adolescents/adults about how to assess and assist them while developing a mental health problem or when they are in a mental health crisis. Participants learn about age appropriate mental and physical development, the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, where and how to get help when developing a mental illness, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

The best pick of the workshop will be the case discussions as they provide participants with a pragmatic view on how things can be handled.
